How To Choose the Suitable Height of Bar Stools

Bar stools offer a casual, versatile seating for a variety of spaces in your home, from the built-in bar top to your kitchen counter. Also, it gives you a wider view of your space, especially if you place the high bar stools at your kitchen counter, kitchen island, or bar top.

That said, finding the right bar stool for your home can be challenging because you have to consider a variety of factors such as height, style, and comfort. Before that, let’s look at the differences between bar and counter stools.

Counter Stools vs Bar Stools

Counter and bar stools are often used in similar settings but are two different assets based on the height as well as functionality.

Counter Stools

A counter stool is a type of seating that allows people to sit comfortably behind the kitchen counter. It’s often used by restaurant owners to give people the option to watch how their food or beverage is prepared and later indulge in it.

The kitchen countertop, however, is generally designed in a way that’s accessible to people who are either sitting or standing. This means your counter stools have to be tall enough to provide maximum seating comfort at the kitchen counter.

A kitchen counter typically stands between 36 and 39 inches above floor level, which means you’ll need to get stools that measure 24 to 27 inches high. That way, you or your family can spend time seated comfortably in the kitchen.

Bar Stools

Much like counter stools, bar stools allow people to sit comfortably by the bar without having to adjust their sitting posture often. It usually has a footrest to offer support to whoever sitting on it.

Also, the height and narrowness of bar stools are designed based on its stability for regular use in bars, lounges, pubs, or even your bar at home.

That said, the standard bar height typically stands between 40 to 42 inches above floor level. This means you’ll need bar stools that measure 28 to 30 inches high. With these dimensions, you’ll have a pleasant time eating and drinking at home while having enough room for your knees.

Despite the differences, bar stools can be still be used in your kitchen, provided that you consider the height, style, and design when choosing the right ones for your home.

Choose the right bar stool height

To determine which stool you need, measure the height of your kitchen counter or bar top. Bear in mind that you need to leave ample room between the tabletop and stool for maximum seating comfort.

Counter stool height – Countertops generally range from 36 to 39 inches high, so you’ll need stools that range from 24 to 27 inches tall.

Bar stool height – Bar tops typically range from 40 to 42 inches high, so you’ll need bar stools that range from 28 to 30 inches tall.

Determine how many stools can fit

Having ample space between your bar stools ensures that you or your family members can easily sit and move around without bumping elbows. So, it’s crucial to determine how many stools can fit based on the recommended spacing as the length of your counter or bar top may vary.

That said, the amount of space you give between each bar stool depends on its dimension and swivel functionality.

For bar stools measuring 16 to 18 inches wide, leave at least 6 inches between each stool and at either end of your bar or counter.

For bar stools measuring 19 to 22 inches wide, maintain around 8 to 11 inches between each stool.

For bar stools that swivel and/or have arms, you’ll have to provide more space between each stool.
